Huawei made several announcements at IFA 2019, one of them was the third generation of the company’s earbuds – Huawei Freebuds 3.
At first glance, you can see that Huawei FreeBuds 3 are inspired by Apple’s product. However, it cannot be said that we are dealing with an exact copy. There are differences in terms of both appearance and specification. What’s more, according to the spec it seems that Freebuds 3 might be even a better choice.
The earbuds come in a circular charging case, a bit bigger than the one of AirPods. At the bottom of each earbud, there is a metal nubbin which is actually a microphone duct. This design ensures clearer call quality. Huawei boasts that even when cycling at a speed of 20 km/h, you should be able to have a chat without any interference.
FreeBuds 3 with Kirin A1
Sound quality is ensured by a dedicated audio chip called Kirin A1, which supports Bluetooth 5.1. It uses up to 50% less power than the H1 chip used by Apple, which gives Huawei the opportunity to focus on other aspects of the device, without worrying about battery life. Freebuds 3 should work for 4 hours on a single charge, and this can be extended up to 20 hours with the charging case. The case has a Type-C connection but also supports wireless charging, which means that with Huawei phones, you can use the reverse wireless charging feature.
The new processor decreases the sound delay (e.g., in games) to only 190 ms. To compare, AirPods have a delay of 220 ms, and Galaxy Buds from Samsung – 564 ms. With 14mm high-sensitivity dynamic driver on board, the earbuds should provide a loud and bass-rich sound. Huawei also brags that Freebuds 3 are world’s first earbuds with open-fit active noise cancellation (ANC) with up to 15-decibel ambient noise reduction. The level of noise reduction can be adjusted for each earbud separately.
Huawei did not provide specific details about the release or price but said that Freebuds 3 should be available somewhere next month and cost less than $199 (price or Airpods). They will come in black and white colors variants.
