Why this Travel Iron is not really for traveling?

Travel Iron - Collar perfect

Today, people are traveling more often for leisure and business, and they want to look neatly. We feel uncomfortable when seeing others looking at our wrinkled shirt or blouse while talking to them. This foldable travel iron is claimed to be the ultimate secret weapon for travelers, so you don’t have to worry whether or not your collar or pockets look flat.

Travel Iron Design

From the first look, it is hard to determine what it is. Having a look at the dimensions (5.25″ x 3.3″ x 1.5″) and weight (0.81lb/ 360g) you can see that it is a bit smaller than a standard PC mouse, which makes it easy to pack and store.

The design is pretty simple and easy to use, the Iron has one button and six menu options lightning in blue color, convertible wings rotate for traditional ironing and fold flat for touch-ups. Even though most websites claim that it is a lightweight device, with 0.81lb it is a bit heavy for its size. It feels like a small piece of steel or granite.

Travel Iron Features and performance

The Iron is portable but requires a power supply of 110V/220V which makes it not practical and means that you need to look for a socket, which is not something you would really expect from a travel device.

The Iron is foldable, which means that by spreading out the sides of the Iron, you can use it to iron a broader range of clothing like a traditional iron (covering 5.5″ x 3.1″). Sounds pretty good, right? But bear in mind that in this case, you will need a flat surface, which is again something you probably won’t have when traveling. For small areas such as collars, pockets or trouser legs, clip the sides of the Iron and use it while your clothes are on you.

The thing that disturbs me a lot is the overheat. After approximately 2 minutes, the Iron gets hot, and you can feel it on the plastic, it looks like there is no good isolation between the hotplates and the frame.

The Iron has six adjustable temperature patterns, which can be used according to different fabrics ( Silk, polyester, Wool, Cotton, Denim, and Linen), and I consider this as precious information. As provided in the manual these are:

  • Polyester cloth polyester 230°F (110°C)
  • Silk fabric 255°F (124°C)
  • Wool is 275°F (135°C)
  • Cotton fabric (T-shirt) 330°F (165°C)
  • Cowboy 350°F (176°C)
  • Linen flax 350°F (176°C)

I tried to use these modes on the corresponding material, and I had a problem only with linen, which wasn’t properly ironed.

This Foldable Travel Iron can be bought as little as $16.99 and as high as $57.99 in Amazon

Summary

While it might be a good option if you travel somewhere and want to use it when you are on-site already, it’s not very useful when you are actually on the road.
