Xiaomi Mosquito Killer

The summer season is not only a period of carefree rest and barbecues but also, unfortunately, a period of fighting with mosquitoes and other insects that can bite us. Today we are going to review Xiaomi Mosquito Killer 3Life, to see if it can help us to win this fight.

There are a whole lot of different devices on the market which are used to eliminate mosquitoes and other flying insects. However, some of them can have some impact on our health. Others emit a very bad smell. Looking for a safer solution, I came across a USB-powered device that does not emit any toxic substances, but attracts insects and traps them – Xiaomi Mosquito Repellent by 3Life (Xiaomi’s ecological subbrand).

Xiaomi Mosquito Killer

The box contains just the device and USB cable, as well as a short manual. Even though the mechanism seems very simple, the device looks very nice. The design is quite modern-looking.

Starting the Xiaomi Mosquito Killer is quite simple. The cable that protrudes from the device ends with a USB plug, which powers the lamp inside. We can connect it to practically any device with USB socket. However, the safest way is to connect it to any USB charger (e.g., the same that you use for your phone), or to a power bank. The latter option can be particularly useful if you want to turn on the device outdoors.

When connected to the charging and on, the device will light up in blue, and a small fan will be activated. The LED light is designed to attract insects. Then vortex created by the fan pulls the lured mosquitoes inside, and they fall into a trap.

In theory, everything sounds very simple, but the question is how effective Xiaomi Mosquito Killer really is. I am moderately satisfied with my tests so far. The trap works – it attracts various insects. The problem is that it lures not just mosquitoes but also all other insects e.g., some types of flies or moths. And of course, it’s not like all the insects in the room will throw themselves at it immediately after turning on the lamp, so they might circle around for some time. But, after leaving the lamp on for the night, in the morning, we will find quite a lot of insects in it, but in most cases, these will not be all insects that flew into the apartment. And although you can hear that the Mosquito killer is on – because of the fan, it is quiet enough that you can easily fall asleep with it.

Please note that the device, despite its name, is not a real killer, but a trap. Insects are lured and locked into the container and only die if we do not let them out of the trap. If you open the container, it may happen that some of the insects will escape. Therefore, it is worth to wait a few days with opening the trap or empty it outside the house.

Xiaomi Mosquito Killer

Summing up, I think Xiaomi Mosquito Killer is still a good purchase, mainly due to the low price. It costs around $15 dollars, so it is quite cheap for such a device. A big advantage is the power supply via USB and the possibility of power from a power bank. Undoubtedly, it will work well for catching mosquitoes e.g., in a tent. It does not emit any toxins and is safe for our health. But as mentioned, the device is not 100% effective and will not guarantee that every mosquito will fall into the trap.
